Ceiling wash versus wall graze
In tall Gründerzeit flats near Herrengasse, a central diffuser alone leaves corners murky by 17:00 in January. We pair a soft uplight or cove with restrained wall grazers so plaster takes the light instead of the floor.
Low postwar ceilings in outer Jakomini need the opposite: less bounce from white paint, more controlled downlight with wide beams so the room does not feel like a clinic.
Colour temperature for Styrian evenings
Most Graz households ask for warmth after work. We keep ambient between 2700 K and 3000 K for living and dining, then step cooler only where daylight-mimic is useful, such as a north-facing studio loft in Lend.
Mixing 4000 K ambient with 2700 K lamps in the same open plan creates a patchwork that no dimmer can fix — we unify the base layer first.
Kelvin · Use · Mood
| Kelvin | Use | Mood |
|---|---|---|
| 2700 K | Living, dining, bedrooms | Soft evening rest |
| 3000 K | Halls, open kitchens | Clear but calm |
| 3500 K | Daytime home offices | Alert without glare |
| 4000 K | Utility, laundry niches | Practical daylight cue |
Existing circuits and rented flats
Many Jakomini rentals allow fixture swaps but not new cable runs. Ambient strategies then lean on LED replacements, surface tracks, and plug-in wall grazers that still read as a coherent layer.
Owner-occupied Lend lofts usually open wall channels once; we plan ambient loops so future accent spots can tap the same dimmer zone later.
What ambient should not do
Ambient is not reading light and not art light. If you raise the base layer until a novel is readable in the armchair, the room will feel overexposed once guests arrive. Task layers handle that job.
We set ambient so faces look natural at conversation distance, then dim it further for film nights without killing the sense of enclosure.
Audit pricing for ambient-only work
An ambient-focused Layer Audit is €190 for up to three rooms. Ambient Base design packages start at €980 and include fixture schedules, beam notes, and a dimming map for one open-plan zone.
