How we choose housings, beams, and finishes for Styrian apartments — practical notes, not a catalogue dump.

Recessed versus surface in old ceilings

Gründerzeit lath ceilings near the Altstadt often forbid deep recessed cans without structural checks. Surface cylinders and tracks keep the plaster intact while still delivering controlled beams.

Where concrete slabs in Lend lofts allow cutouts, we still limit recess depth so future owners can patch without hunting obscure housings.

Beam angles that match room width

A 15° spot on a three-metre-wide living room creates sharp coins of light that look unfinished. We open to 24–36° for general accent and reserve narrow beams for art under 60 cm wide.

Wall washers need distance from the wall; jammed corridors in Jakomini sometimes force a graze optic instead of a true wash.

Finishes against Graz plaster tones

Warm ochre and soft grey plasters common in renovated Styrian flats fight cold chrome. We default to brushed brass, bronze, or matte black unless the interior is deliberately cool concrete.

White fixtures disappear on white ceilings — useful for ambient, poor for accent where you want a deliberate object.

Keeping lamps you already own

Clients often arrive with inherited glass pendants or family desk lamps. We test their Kelvin and dimming behaviour before discarding them. Many become task or accent pieces once the ambient layer is rebuilt around them.

Schedules list keep / replace / relocate so nothing valuable is boxed away by mistake during works.

Specification fees

Fixture shortlists with EUR price bands for up to twelve positions cost €260 when ordered alone. Inside Ambient Base or Full Stack packages, the shortlist is included.

We do not mark up lamps; you buy through local Graz suppliers or EU web shops at listed retail.
